Visit the Erasmus Primary School
Erasmus Primary School was established in 1996 by the School of Philosophy Melbourne. A group of teachers and parents attending and inspired by the philosophy courses wanted to offer traditional education grounded in philosophy to children. Since its inception, Erasmus Primary School has been dedicated to using philosophy in education, developing the inner as well as the outer person, and looking for balance between the body, mind, heart and spirit in raising a reasonable and harmonious person.
Erasmus is one of only 11 Renaissance schools worldwide
Erasmus Primary School is an independent, non-denominational primary school that draws on some of the great philosophic traditions from around the world. Erasmus offers philosophy, meditation and mindfulness practices as a way of nurturing all aspects of the child. All of the Renaissance schools share the same guiding ethos, which acknowledges that every person shares the same universal essence, and that given the right conditions, all have the capacity to grow to their full potential.
Building character, encouraging respect and consideration
At the heart of Erasmus Primary School is the desire to provide a child with what he/she needs to flourish and live a civilised and cultured life for the good of society. This means developing a character that is caring, thoughtful, resilient, happy, effective and disciplined. All children and staff sit down together daily to eat a freshly prepared, vegetarian morning tea and lunch where children are taught to serve each other before serving themselves. Students regularly sing uplifting songs, enjoy fine music, read and recite literature and participate in plays and assemblies.

Nurturing the power of attention
At Erasmus Primary School, the power of attention is recognised as the master key to the development of a child. Focused attention brings stillness, intelligence, happiness, courage and every virtue that is needed for the discovery and development of a child’s talent – be it academic, artistic, physical or emotional. Simple mindfulness exercises are used to help focus the mind and enable the child to develop an inner quiet, strength and steadiness. They are then able to attend to the task at hand with greater application.
Offering an ambitious and creative curriculum
An Erasmus education offers an ambitious and creative curriculum, designed to give each pupil the opportunity to thrive and flourish according to his or her own unique talents. Erasmus has an academic focus with consistently high academic results and a low student/teacher ratio. They provide a thorough, systematic grounding in Literacy and Numeracy. A diverse palette of visual and performing arts programs includes Art, Music, Drama, Dance and activities such as Needlework and Woodwork. These pursuits greatly assist in the development of intellectual and cognitive skills, self-expression and fine and gross motor skills.
